5 Simple Ways to Limit Fears and Relax So You Can Rock Your Interview

Some people relish first dates. It’s exciting meeting someone new and thinking about the future. Others hate the awkward feeling of making small talk and hoping there’s a spark. It’s just too much pressure.

And it’s the same with job interviews.

Some people are just naturals. For many, it’s a nerve-wracking experience when anxiety can set in and make it nearly impossible to succeed.

If you fall into the “hate” rather than “love” category when it comes to interviewing for a new job, there are a few smart steps you can take to eliminate fears, feel prepared, and ultimately make a great first impression.

Shift Your Perspective:

Many people who get nervous for interviews do so because they think if they screw up they could lose out on an amazing job. Essentially, it’s all on the line. The thing is, not every opportunity is amazing, and the interview is your chance to discover if it’s the right fit for you. Just like a first date, if someone doesn’t like you for being you, you probably shouldn’t move on to date number two. Think about how you’re interviewing the company as much as they are interviewing you.

Prepare and Practice:

The tried-and-true best way to ease worries is to be prepared. That means practicing before the big day. Work with your GetFive career coach on answers to interview questions. Make sure to research the company history and products so you can speak to them well. If you have the names of the people you’re interviewing with, look them up on staff pages and LinkedIn to get a better sense of who they are.

Consider It a Conversation:

Rather than picturing an interview like a suspect getting grilled, think of it like a conversation about something you have in common. You like your work and are proud of what you’ve accomplished. Talking about that should be easy, so approach the interview like a conversation rather than a Q&A you’re being graded on.

Visualize success:

The mind is a powerful thing. If you think you’re going to fail, you’re more likely to mess up. if you think you’re going to succeed, you’re more likely to do and say the right things. Visualize your success. Meditate about your self-worth. Head to the restroom and do some power poses beforehand. You’ll be surprised how much confidence and charisma this can give you.

Exercise and sleep:

Your physical state will influence your mental state on interview day. Make sure to take care of your body by exercising the day before to tire yourself out for a good night’s rest. Strive for at least seven solid hours of sleep so you’re rejuvenated and ready to rock whatever comes your way.

These five simple steps can help even the most nervous people succeed at an interview. For more ideas, reach out to your GetFive career coach and network today.
