Do something you love and you won’t work a day in your life.
It’s a phrase we’ve all heard but one that rarely applies to the real world. Even jobs you initially adored grow bland over time. Maybe you’re not challenged. Maybe it’s too stressful. Maybe there’s too much corporate red tape. Maybe you’re just over the industry and crave something new.
For whatever reason, if your heart just isn’t in your work anymore, you’re not alone. According to a recent Gallup survey, only one-third of U.S. employees bring a consistently high level of initiative, commitment, passion and productivity to their jobs.
If you’re part of the two-thirds who don’t, it’s time to ask yourself some tough questions in order to find your passion again.
1. What drives me now?
What you felt passionate about a few years (or decades) ago may not be the same thing that fuels your fire today. People change and so too do the things they are passionate about. Do some deep thinking about what a meaningful work experience is to you today and then take steps toward making that a reality.
2. What can I do to revive my current job?
No job is perfect no matter how high up you are or how high of a salary you earn. However, you should mostly enjoy your day-to-day work. If you don’t, consider how you can make a change. Start with something basic like a pros and cons list. Look at the cons from all angles and come up with a plan to try to flip them. Set up meetings with influencers and see what you can shake loose.
3. Who can help me work through these feelings?
A support network can be beneficial when it comes to big life hurdles. Knowing whether to keep working or make a change is a huge decision. A mentor or other professional contacts can help you assess your feelings so you can discover the right way to correct your ship’s course. Family and friends can be helpful too, but may not lend as much insight into your career considerations as necessary to make a well-rounded decision.
4. Is it time for a new job or a new career completely?
Sometimes all you need to reignite your passion is a new job. New responsibilities at a new company bring excitement. For some people, dissatisfaction is more than just their current position. It might be time to consider other options, whether it be a move to a different industry or a different profession completely.
